Tokushima Castle Ruins

Ruins of the 1586 Hachisuka stronghold in a hilltop park

The remains of the castle built by Hachisuka Iemasa in 1586 occupy Mount Shiroyama just northeast of Tokushima Station. Nothing stands above ground except the formidable stone walls and gatehouse foundations — the wooden buildings were torn down at the start of the Meiji era — but the park around the ruins is one of the most pleasant spots in the city, particularly during the cherry blossom in early April.

The Tokushima Castle Museum at the foot of the hill displays armour, weapons, and a scale model showing what the complex looked like in its heyday. Admission also covers Senshukaku-teien, the daimyo's strolling garden behind the museum.

A story
The original keep was never lost to fire or war — it was deliberately dismantled in 1873 under the Meiji edict abolishing feudal castles. Only the stone walls and the moat survive, but the foundation gives a clearer sense of the hilltop layout than many reconstructed castles do.
