Tsuruga Castle

Tsuruga Castle is the symbol of Aizuwakamatsu, a white keep with red roof tiles standing inside broad stone walls and moats. The present tower is a reconstruction, but the site is the real thing: Aizu forces held out here for a month during the Boshin War before the castle was destroyed by the new Meiji government.

Inside, the museum tells the local story through samurai culture, lacquerware, and the war that ended the domain. The top floor has a fine view across the Aizu basin, and the park is especially good in cherry blossom season.
