Tsuchiyu Onsen is an old hot-spring town in the hills west of Fukushima Station, close enough for a half-day soak but far enough to feel out of the city. Inns line the river valley, public baths and footbaths are scattered through town, and the mountain air changes the pace quickly.
The town is also known for Tsuchiyu kokeshi, the simple wooden dolls made in several Tohoku onsen areas. Even if you are not staying overnight, it is worth coming for a bath, a walk through the compact streets, and a look at the doll shops before heading back to Fukushima.
