Hachimantai Ski Resort gives the area a practical winter anchor. Its two linked areas have different moods: Panorama is easier and better for families, while Shimokura is steeper and more interesting when the snow is good.
It is smaller than Appi Kogen, but that is part of the appeal. You come for deep Tohoku snow, mountain views, and the chance to pair skiing with an onsen rather than for a polished international resort scene.
