The Kisakata Kujukushima Islands are not islands anymore. They were once low islets in a shallow coastal lagoon, admired by travellers and poets, until an earthquake in 1804 lifted the seabed and turned the lagoon into farmland.
Today the old islands rise as tree-covered mounds from rice fields, with Mount Chokai behind them when the weather is clear. It is a quiet landscape, but a strange and memorable one if you know what you are looking at.
