The Namahage Museum is the best introduction to Oga's most famous tradition. It explains the masked figures who visit homes around New Year, scaring laziness out of children and adults with a mix of theatre, threat, and community ritual.
The masks and costumes vary by village, which is part of the interest. Visit before any Namahage performance or shrine stop, and the peninsula's folklore becomes much easier to read.
