Sankyo Storehouses are Sakata's defining image: long wooden rice warehouses built in 1893, backed by a line of old zelkova trees planted to keep the buildings cool in summer.
The complex now holds shops, food, and exhibits, but its value is the way it makes the old rice port visible. This is where Sakata's inland agricultural wealth met the shipping routes of the Sea of Japan.
