Nanko Park is a landscaped lake park south of the old centre. It is often described as one of Japan's earliest public parks, created in the Edo period by Matsudaira Sadanobu as a place that commoners as well as samurai could enjoy.
The park is best in cherry blossom and autumn colour, but it works at any season as a calm walk after Komine Castle. The Kyorakutei teahouse adds a small, formal garden note to the lakeside paths.
