Shirakawa Barrier is the old checkpoint site that marked the symbolic entrance to Tohoku. There is no great gate left, just a shrine, markers, trees, and the quiet of a place that mattered more in memory than in stone.
That memory is the reason to come. Matsuo Basho passed this way on the journey later written as The Narrow Road to the Deep North, and older court poets used Shirakawa as shorthand for leaving the known world behind.
