Little Petra (Siq al-Barid)

A miniature version of Petra eight kilometres north, in a slot canyon a fraction of the size of the main Siq. It served as a caravanserai for the trade caravans arriving from the north — temples, dining rooms, water cisterns, and storage chambers all carved into the rock.

The site is small enough to walk in 45 minutes. It is free, less crowded, and gives you the architecture of Petra without the queues at the Treasury. A small footpath also connects Little Petra to the main site via the back of the Monastery — about a four-hour walk for fit hikers with a guide. The Beidha Neolithic village, one of the earliest farming settlements anywhere, sits a few hundred metres further on.

A story
A small upper chamber in the so-called Painted Biclinium retains the only surviving Nabataean wall paintings — vines, putti, masks, and birds in Hellenistic style, miraculously preserved by soot from later Bedouin cooking fires.
