The viewpoint at the northern edge of the Umm Qais ridge is one of the finest in Jordan. Below you, the Yarmouk river gorge drops steeply toward the Jordan Valley; to the west, the Sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias) glints in the distance; and to the north, the Golan Heights rise into Syria. On exceptionally clear days you can see across four countries — Jordan, Israel, the Palestinian Territories, and Syria — from a single vantage point.
The view is good at any time of day, but the late afternoon light is particularly striking when it catches the black basalt columns and turns the distant lake silver. Bring a jacket if you visit in winter — the ridge is exposed and the wind off the Golan can be fierce. This spot is free to access and takes only a few minutes to walk from the main site entrance.
