Wadi Rum is Lawrence of Arabia country. A vast desert landscape of dry riverbeds, natural rock bridges, high mountains, and wind-swept black hills stretching to the horizon. The scenery is spectacular and unlike anything else in the Middle East — towering sandstone cliffs rise from pink and red sand, and the silence is immense.
You can arrange a trip to Wadi Rum from Aqaba or Amman. Camel treks, jeep tours, hot air ballooning — it is all possible, though you are likely to pay a premium. The experience of sleeping under the stars in a Bedouin camp is worth the effort and the cost.
If you venture out here on your own, the nearest town for purchasing supplies is Quweira. The small village of Rum sits at the end of the road, 35 kilometres into the desert, and serves as the main entry point to the protected area.
