Uzgen Bazaar

A working market drawing Uzbek traders from surrounding villages

The Uzgen Bazaar is a sprawling daily market a few minutes' walk from the Karakhanid monuments. It serves the agricultural hinterland and draws traders from the largely Uzbek-speaking villages on both sides of the Kara Darya. The mix of produce, cloth, household goods, and livestock makes it a busy, noisy, properly functional market rather than anything aimed at tourists.

The bazaar is most lively on weekday mornings. You'll find seasonal vegetables and fruit, bolts of fabric in vivid colours, and the kind of hardware and spare-parts stalls that cater to subsistence farming. The food stalls near the entrance sell samsa (flaky pastries stuffed with meat and onion) and laghman (pulled noodles with vegetable stew) at low prices.
