Malé Atoll (officially North Malé Atoll, or Kaafu) is the most visited atoll in the Maldives and the natural starting point for any trip. Velana International Airport sits on Hulhulé Island within the atoll, a five-minute ferry from the capital. Most visitors pass through here at minimum, and many stay.
The atoll packs in the country's largest city (Malé), the international airport, and more resort islands within easy reach than anywhere else in the Maldives. Resorts here are accessible by speedboat — 20 minutes to an hour from the airport — which means no seaplane wait and no daylight dependency. That convenience makes it a popular choice for shorter stays.
The house reefs off many islands in this atoll are excellent, and the dive sites — including several famous thilas — are well developed. It's not remote or pristine in the way the outer atolls are, but the access and infrastructure are unbeatable.
