At the heart of Damak's bazaar stands a replica of the Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu, built to serve the local Hindu population and pilgrims passing through the Terai. The temple is smaller than its Kathmandu model but faithful to the pagoda style and active with daily worship. It draws devotees from the surrounding villages and from traders in the market.
Visiting around dawn or dusk, when puja is in progress and incense smoke drifts through the market lanes, gives the best sense of the temple as a living centre of community life. The bazaar around it is worth walking through — a typical Terai market town scene of vegetable stalls, tea shops, and cycle repairers that is largely unchanged from the way these towns have operated for decades.
