A small, much-restored mosque inside the old quarter, also known as Masjid al-Qiblatayn — the Mosque of the Two Qiblas — because it has two prayer niches in its wall. One is said to date from the very early Islamic period before the qibla was reoriented from Jerusalem to Mecca, although the architectural evidence is debated.
The mosque is one of the oldest religious buildings in the country; documentary references go back to the 9th century. Non-Muslims are generally not admitted inside, but the outside, with its stepped minaret and decorated wooden door, is worth a look on the way between the souq and the date palm oasis.
