Citrus Groves

The flat irrigated countryside around Sargodha is one of the world's largest contiguous citrus-growing regions, devoted overwhelmingly to the kinnow mandarin. Driving through the groves during harvest — December through March — is among the most visually distinctive experiences in Punjab.

Several growers offer farm visits during the season, with tasting and a tour of the packing sheds. The smaller towns of Bhalwal and Bhera to the north are at the heart of the production area.

A story
The Sargodha district produces around two thirds of Pakistan's citrus harvest, dominated by the local kinnow mandarin — a hybrid bred in California in the 1930s and adopted with extraordinary success in the Lower Bari Doab. The harvest, December through March, fills the roads with carts of fruit and the air with the scent of citrus blossom.
