Kirana Hills

A range of low, rocky hills east of Sargodha, abruptly rising out of the flat plain to a maximum of around 1,000 metres. The exposed black rock is among the oldest in the subcontinent, and the bare slopes give a stark, lunar appearance against the green of the surrounding citrus groves.

The publicly accessible parts of the range have hiking trails and a small picnic area; the eastern and southern flanks contain restricted military zones. Best visited in winter when the heat and haze drop.

A story
A small range of black volcanic outcrops rising abruptly from the Punjab plains east of Sargodha, geologically isolated and known locally as "the small Himalayas." The hills also conceal one of Pakistan's most sensitive military sites — a former underground nuclear weapons facility — and the area immediately around the test tunnels remains closed.
