Sayed al-Hashim Mosque

The traditional burial place of the Prophet Muhammad's great-grandfather

The Sayed al-Hashim Mosque, in the ad-Darraj Quarter of the Old City, was one of the largest and most important mosques in Gaza. Tradition holds that the tomb of Hashim ibn Abd Manaf — great-grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad and a major figure in pre-Islamic Mecca — lies within. This gives the mosque a particular religious weight, and the link to Muhammad's family is the source of one of Gaza's traditional Arabic names.

The current building is largely Mamluk in date, much rebuilt in the Ottoman period, with a high domed prayer hall, a courtyard, and a slender minaret. It was damaged in the war that began in late 2023.

A story
Hashim ibn Abd Manaf, the great-grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad and patriarch of the Hashemite clan, is said to have died in Gaza on a trading journey from Mecca. His tomb in this mosque is the reason Gaza is sometimes called Ghazza Hashim — "Gaza of Hashim" — in Arabic.
