Things to Do

For most of the twentieth century the Gaza Strip had a small but distinctive set of historic sights, concentrated in the Old City of Gaza: a great Crusader-era mosque, a Greek Orthodox church older than most in the Holy Land, a Mamluk bathhouse, and an Ottoman square. Coastal Mediterranean beaches stretched south to Rafah. Much of this heritage has been damaged or destroyed in successive conflicts, most catastrophically in the war that began in late 2023, and visiting the territory has not been possible for ordinary travellers for many years. The listings below describe places as they were before the most recent destruction, both as a record and because reconstruction may eventually allow some to be seen again.
