Kuk Early Agricultural Site

Kuk Early Agricultural Site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Wahgi Valley northeast of Mount Hagen. Archaeologists have found evidence here of wetland drainage and plant cultivation going back thousands of years, including early systems for growing taro, banana, and other crops.

The site is intellectually more impressive than visually dramatic. You are looking at a worked landscape: old channels, swamp edges, and fields whose importance comes from what they reveal about the independent development of agriculture in New Guinea. Visit only with local arrangements, and do not expect signs, ticket booths, or a museum-style presentation.
