Boluminski Highway

The Boluminski Highway runs almost the entire length of New Ireland, more than 250 km from Kavieng south to Namatanai. It is one of the few stretches of road in Papua New Guinea where you can actually drive a long distance without serious incident, and it makes a fascinating cross-section of village life: coconut plantations, beaches, traditional villages with thatched houses set back from the road, and the occasional war wreck rusting at the verge.

A day trip from Kavieng can comfortably reach Pinikidu, Lemus, and the old plantation at Lasul. With more time, you can drive the full length to Namatanai, stopping at coastal villages and reef beaches en route. A 4WD is not strictly necessary on the sealed sections but recommended further south.

A story
The road is named after Franz Boluminski, the German colonial administrator of New Ireland from 1910 to 1913, who conscripted villagers to build it. Each village along the route had to maintain its own section, a system that — for better or worse — left the country with one of its most reliable roads.
