Chawa View Deck

On Batan's north coast, a short detour from the road to Basco's lighthouse brings you to a rough concrete platform overlooking a dramatic stretch of cliffs and sea. The view from Chawa takes in layered basalt columns dropping to the water, with the Pacific opening out beyond. When the swell is up, waves crash against the cliff face far below. When it is calm, the sea is a deep blue-green and you can see the rocks under the surface.

It is not the most developed viewpoint in Batanes — just a railing, a small shelter, and a wide view — but the location is exceptional. Most visitors come here in the morning as part of a north Batan circuit that also takes in the lighthouse and the Imnajbu area. The light is best in the morning when the sun is behind you and the sea ahead is fully illuminated.
