Lake Danao National Park

Lake Danao National Park occupies a highland crater about 20 kilometres northeast of Ormoc City. The park centres on the crater lake itself, a serene body of water at 660 metres above sea level, surrounded by forest that escaped the worst of the typhoon damage because of its elevation and remoteness.

The main activity is renting a bangka boat from the small visitor facility at the lakeshore and paddling among the floating islands — dense, matted platforms of aquatic vegetation that drift across the lake surface. The forest walking trail around part of the lake takes a couple of hours and passes through secondary growth where kingfishers and herons are common. Bring your own food and water; facilities are basic.

A story
Lake Danao sits in a volcanic crater at 660 metres elevation. The lake is famous for its floating islands — dense mats of vegetation that drift slowly across the surface, sometimes carrying small trees. Local fishermen navigate around them by reading the current.
