A few blocks south of the plaza, the public market is where the city actually feeds itself. Fish from the Tañon Strait — tuna, mackerel, occasionally bigger pelagics — are landed at the small port in the morning and sold here by mid-morning. The dry-goods section sells rice, dried fish, sweets and the usual sundries.
It is not a tourist attraction, but if you want a quick read on the rhythm of a working Visayan provincial city, it is the most honest place in Tanjay. Go early — by midday the fish counters are washed down and the produce sellers are packing up.
