About 50km southwest of Sakakah lies one of the most historically significant sites in northern Saudi Arabia: the ancient oasis town of Dumat al-Jandal. The site has been inhabited since at least the 8th century BC and served as a Nabataean trading post, a Byzantine-era town, and an early Islamic settlement. What remains is a remarkable cluster of stone ruins, an ancient mosque, and the towering Marid Castle.
Marid Castle stands on a rocky hill above the old town, its mudbrick towers visible from a distance across the palm-filled oasis. Omar Mosque, at the base of the hill, is one of the oldest surviving mosques in Saudi Arabia. The old city around them is largely ruined but you can walk through the stone lanes and see the remnants of houses, wells, and market spaces. The site is under the management of the Saudi Heritage Commission and is better signed and more accessible than it was a few years ago. Well worth the drive from Sakakah.
