Orchard Road is Singapore's great shopping boulevard, a two-kilometre stretch of malls running northwest from the edge of the colonial district that the city has turned into one of the most concentrated retail corridors in Asia. The road takes its name from the nutmeg and pepper plantations that once lined it; the only orchards left are the names of the malls.
The strip is essentially a continuous chain of shopping centres — ION Orchard, Ngee Ann City with its Takashimaya department store, Paragon, Wisma Atria, 313@Somerset — linked by underground passages and pedestrian bridges so you can cross the whole length without stepping outside. ION Orchard, with its rippling facade and an observation deck on the 56th floor, is the architectural showpiece. The malls range from luxury flagships to the more youthful Somerset end, and the basements hold some of the best food courts in the city.
Orchard is not a place for history or atmosphere — it is a place to shop, eat, and be air-conditioned. But it is also where Singaporeans gather: the Christmas light-up along the road each December is a genuine civic event, and the side streets like Emerald Hill, a preserved row of Peranakan shophouses just off the main drag, offer a quieter counterpoint with their bars and restored terraces.
