Ojukheon is Gangneung's most important historic site, named for the black bamboo that grows around the old house. It is associated with the Confucian scholar Yi I and his mother Shin Saimdang, both central figures in Korean cultural memory.
The compound includes old wooden buildings, shrines, and museum displays. It is not a huge sight, but it gives Gangneung a depth that the beach alone would not.
