Museum SAN

Mountain art museum designed by Tadao Ando, with gardens, concrete, light, and space.

Museum SAN is Wonju's clearest claim on a traveler's time. Designed by Tadao Ando, it sits in the hills of Oak Valley and uses long approaches, water, stone, exposed concrete, and changing light as much as the works on the walls.

The museum includes outdoor gardens, galleries, a meditation hall, and a James Turrell space. It is remote enough that you should plan transport before going, but that same distance is what lets the architecture breathe.
