Kallady Bridge, also known as Lady Manning Bridge, crosses the lagoon east of the old town. Built in 1924, it was long one of Batticaloa's best-known colonial structures and a useful viewpoint over the water.
The bridge is also tied to the city's singing-fish folklore. Night boat trips in the lagoon traditionally used an oar as a listening tube, with visitors leaning close to hear faint underwater sounds.
