The ruins of the old British administrative building — the Kachcheri — sit right in the centre of Jaffna, a crumbling colonnaded structure that was damaged beyond repair during the civil war and never rebuilt. The arched verandahs and thick walls recall the city's colonial past; the shell damage and collapsed sections speak to its more recent history.
There is no formal entrance or ticket, and the ruins are freely accessible. They have a strange, melancholy quality — grand enough to suggest what they once were, damaged enough that reconstruction is hard to imagine. Worth a short visit for anyone trying to understand what Jaffna went through during the decades of conflict.
