Phuket Big Buddha

The Phuket Big Buddha — officially the Great Buddha of Phuket — sits atop Nakkerd Hill on the southern part of the island, visible from much of Chalong and well beyond. At 45 metres tall and clad in white Burmese marble, it is a genuine landmark rather than a roadside curiosity. The hill commands views over Chalong Bay, Kata Beach, and on clear days all the way to the Phi Phi Islands.

The site is an active place of worship, not just a tourist photo stop. Smaller shrines, Buddha images, and bells surround the main statue. Visitors are welcome but are expected to dress modestly — sarongs are available for hire at the entrance. The road up to the summit is steep and winding; the final stretch is flanked by naga serpents. Come early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and the tour-bus crowds, and to catch the best light on the marble.

A story
The Great Buddha was started in 2004 but took nearly two decades to complete — construction depended entirely on donations, so the pace of building rose and fell with the generosity of visitors. Each of the white Burmese marble tiles that covers the statue was placed by a donor who paid to have their name inscribed underneath it.
