Thale Ban National Park

Thale Ban National Park covers 196 square kilometres of rainforest along the Thai-Malaysian border, about 40 km northeast of Satun town. It is one of the least-visited national parks in southern Thailand — there are no major resorts and no convenient transport links — but its forests are excellent, with gibbons, hornbills, barking deer, and the occasional leopard among the wildlife. The canopy is dominated by towering dipterocarps, and the understorey is dense and dark.

The main attraction for most visitors is Wang Sai waterfall, accessible via a trail from the park headquarters, and the cave system accessible by long-tail boat from the main lake (Thale Ban means "village sea"). The park has basic bungalow accommodation. A guide is strongly recommended for anyone wanting to explore beyond the well-marked main trail — the forest is dense and the paths are not obvious.
