Shark Island

Shark Island is a small rocky outcrop off the southeast coast of Koh Tao, reachable by longtail boat from Chalok Ban Kao in about 10 minutes. The site is good for both diving and snorkelling: the shallow areas have healthy hard coral and are good for beginners, while the deeper sections around the base of the rock suit more experienced divers and often have better fish life.

The island itself is photogenic — the granite formations and the blue-green water make it one of the more scenic spots around Koh Tao. If you have a snorkel and fins, the rocks and shallow reef on the western side can be explored quite thoroughly in an hour or two.

A story
Despite its name, Shark Island has no resident sharks in the dangerous sense — it was named for the blacktip reef sharks that patrol the surrounding waters and are still sometimes seen. The island itself is a dramatic granite outcrop with a few trees clinging to the rock, visible from the beaches at Chalok Ban Kao and resembling, from certain angles, a shark's fin breaking the surface.
