Tapee River Waterfront

The Tapee River runs through the heart of Surat Thani, and its banks are the most pleasant part of the city to spend an evening. As the sun goes down, a riverside night market sets up along the waterfront promenade — vendors selling grilled seafood, Southern Thai curries, fresh fruit, and snacks alongside the usual mix of clothing and household goods stalls. It draws locals rather than tourists, which makes it one of the more authentic market experiences in southern Thailand.

The old town neighbourhood near the river has some faded Chinese shophouse architecture dating from the early 20th century, when Surat Thani was a prosperous trading port. The buildings are weathered but give the area character. Exploring on foot in the early evening, before heading to the market, takes no more than half an hour.
