The Thao Suranari Monument is Korat's emotional centre. The bronze statue honours Lady Mo, or Ya Mo, who is credited locally with rallying captives against the forces of King Anouvong of Vientiane in 1826. The story is part history, part civic myth, and wholly alive in the city.
Come in the evening, when people stop by after work with garlands, candles, and incense. The Chumphon Gate stands behind the statue, so this is also the best place to get your bearings in the old moated centre.
