Wat Phra That Nong Bua is Ubon's most recognisable temple. Its tall white chedi was built in the 20th century and consciously echoes the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya in India, giving the complex a shape unlike most Thai temple compounds.
The decoration is modern and bright rather than antique, but the scale works. Come early or late in the day, when the white surfaces are less harsh and the chedi stands clearly above the surrounding neighbourhood.
