Wat Supattanaram

Riverside royal temple with an unusual Thai, Khmer, Lao, and Western-style ordination hall.

Wat Supattanaram was the first Dhammayutika temple in Ubon Ratchathani province. Its ordination hall is the reason to visit: a Thai roof sits above a Western-influenced hall and a Khmer-style base, a mix that fits the city's borderland position.

The temple stands near the Mun River and works well with a slow walk through the older centre. It is less immediately striking than Wat Phra That Nong Bua, but more revealing once you look at the details.
