Wat Thung Si Mueang is the most atmospheric temple in central Ubon. Its great treasure is the wooden ho trai, or scripture hall, built on stilts above a pond to protect palm-leaf manuscripts from insects.
The temple was founded during the reign of Rama III, and its forms show the cultural overlap between early Bangkok, Vientiane, and Isaan. It is a calm place to understand Ubon as a Buddhist city rather than just a transport stop.
