Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao is Lampang's heavyweight temple, important both for its architecture and for its place in the story of the Emerald Buddha. The image was kept here in the 15th century before moving on through northern Thai history toward its later fame in Bangkok.
The compound has more variety than many visitors expect: Lanna forms, Burmese-influenced details, a tall chedi, and quiet corners that reward unhurried looking. Dress modestly and give it proper time, because this is one of Lampang's defining sights rather than a quick temple stop.
