Lake Boeckella

Freshwater lake above Hope Bay that helps support both wildlife and the base.

Lake Boeckella is a small freshwater lake fed by the glacier above Esperanza Base. Its practical value is obvious in Antarctica: fresh water, exposed land, and enough habitat to draw skuas and other birds.

The lake is not dramatic in the usual postcard sense. It matters because it helps explain why this bleak bit of coast became unusually livable for wildlife and people.
