The French Southern and Antarctic Lands (Terres australes et antarctiques françaises, TAAF) is a French overseas territory comprising several remote sub-Antarctic island groups in the southern Indian Ocean and a sector of Antarctica itself. The main islands are Crozet, Kerguelen, Amsterdam, and Saint-Paul. There is no permanent civilian population — only rotating teams of researchers and military personnel, numbering around 100 at any given time.
Kerguelen, the largest island group, is sometimes called the "Island of Desolation" — a description that undersells it only slightly. The archipelago is dramatic and utterly isolated: volcanic peaks, glaciers, rocky coastlines, and raging seas that see almost no sunlight in winter. Crozet and Amsterdam islands host massive seabird colonies, including king penguins, albatrosses, and petrels, making them significant for biological research.
Access is only possible by the supply ship Marion Dufresne, which makes a few runs a year from La Réunion. There is no tourist infrastructure and no regular visitor access. These islands are for the most committed of the world's travelers — or for those lucky enough to secure a berth on a research voyage.
