The island's only landing place for cargo ships is a narrow concrete channel blasted through the makatea on the western coast. The harbour is too small and shallow for the inter-island ship to enter — barges shuttle goods from the freighter anchored offshore — but it is a fine spot to watch a sunset, and the channel itself is calm enough for a swim when the trade winds drop.
The boat-ramp area is also where the few visiting yachts come ashore by dinghy.
