Like its neighbours Atiu and Mitiaro, Mauke is ringed by makatea — ancient coral reef pushed five metres above the waterline by tectonic uplift, then weathered into a razor-edged limestone band 200-300 metres wide. The result is dramatic but inhospitable: there are very few sandy beaches, but the coral terrace is honeycombed with caves, blowholes, and tidal swimming pools.
The coast path that links Areora to Ngatiarua passes the best of these. Wear sturdy shoes — bare feet on the makatea will end your trip.
