Ua Pou

Ua Pou is the third largest of the Marquesas Islands, its skyline defined by extraordinary basalt spires that rise from the island's volcanic core like needles against the sky. The tallest, Mount Oave, reaches 1,203 metres. From the sea the island looks almost improbable — more a stage set than a real place. These peaks gave the island its name in Marquesan legend, where they are described as the pillars holding up the sky.

The main village of Hakahau has a small guesthouse and a market. The island is known for the flower stone — a pink volcanic rock with a natural flower pattern — which local artisans carve into small sculptures. The hiking is dramatic, and the valleys between the spires are densely forested. Access is by Air Tahiti from Nuku Hiva or Hiva Oa.
