Wotje Village and WWII Remains

Wotje village is the practical centre of the atoll and the best place to look for World War II remains. Japanese defensive works, old concrete, and traces of the former base sit close to the modern village landscape, where daily life has simply grown around them.

The remains are not presented as a formal battlefield park. Go with someone local who can point out what is worth seeing, and remember that much of the land is used by families, schools, churches, and the community.

A story
Wotje was bombed by American forces but bypassed during the island-hopping campaign. Like several Japanese bases in the Marshalls, it was left isolated until the surrender rather than captured in a direct assault.
