Smaller and more remote than Ant Atoll, Pakin lies about 35 kilometres west of Pohnpei. It is one of the few places in Micronesia where you can dive in near-complete solitude. The atoll has a small resident community and receives very few visitors. The diving is wall diving with strong currents, suited to experienced divers — the shark action in the passes can be intense, and the outer walls hold very large fish rarely seen closer to civilisation.
Pakin is a full-day expedition from Kolonia and requires a boat charter. For divers who have done Ant and want something more remote and genuinely off the beaten track, it offers a dramatic contrast. Bring everything you need — there are no facilities.
