Sokehs Rock

Sokehs Rock dominates the northern skyline of Kolonia — a 190-metre basalt monolith rising almost vertically from the end of Sokehs Island, visible from almost everywhere on the main part of Pohnpei. The rock is the hardened plug of an ancient volcano, its upper face sheer grey-black cliff. From the summit, on a clear day, you can see across the entire lagoon and out towards the open Pacific.

The hike to the top is steep but manageable in an hour or so with a guide. Trails wind through thick vegetation past Japanese wartime gun emplacements and bunkers from the Second World War. The views over Kolonia town, the airport causeway and the reef far below make the effort worthwhile. Arrange access and a guide through your accommodation in Kolonia — the trails are not well-marked and the historical context is best explained in person.

A story
In 1910, Pohnpeians staged an armed rebellion against German colonial rule from the heights of Sokehs Rock. The Germans brought in troops from New Guinea to suppress the uprising; seventeen rebels were executed on the beach below. The ridge still holds rusty remnants of the Japanese fortifications built thirty years later during a second occupation.
