To Sua Ocean Trench

To Sua Ocean Trench is Upolu's most dramatic swimming spot: a deep, round, fern-lined pool reached by a long wooden ladder from the garden above. The water is clear, cool, and tidal, with sunlight falling through the open roof of the collapsed lava tube.

Come early or late if you want it quiet. The ladder is steep and slippery when wet, so this is not a place to rush or to visit with very small children. The setting is extraordinary, but it is still village land; pay the entrance fee, dress modestly away from the pool, and take your time.

A story
To Sua means "giant swimming hole", and the name is pleasingly literal. The pool sits in a collapsed lava tube linked to the sea by underground channels, so the water rises and falls gently with the tide even though you are swimming inside a green-walled pit.
