The Split

The Split is the narrow channel across the northern tip of the island, created when Hurricane Hattie cut through in 1961. The western side has a small beach and a string of bars — Lazy Lizard is the most famous — where you can swim, drink cold Belikins, and watch the boats pass through. It's busiest in the afternoon.

The water on the Split side is calm and deep enough to jump from the dock. Strong currents sometimes run through the channel on the eastern side, so stick to the sheltered spots. The Split is free to access and is the island's main social hub.

A story
Hurricane Hattie tore the island in two in 1961, carving a narrow channel across the northern tip that separates the populated south from a wilder, mangrove-covered north. The channel became one of Caye Caulker's defining features — a swimming hole backed by beach bars that fills every afternoon with travelers comparing reef trips.
